Swimming Screenings

What is a Swimming Screening?

Efficient swimming is the combination of achieving the necessary positions for each part of the stroke, and then having the strength and stability to pull yourself through the water. Swimming screenings are an assessment of important biomechanics required to swim efficiently. The assessment will highlight weaknesses or restrictions that may lead to injury or may be limiting your performance.

Who is it for?

A swimming screening is for anyone who is involved in swimming, whether you are a Junior Club swimmer competing at State or National Level, or a social open water swimmer, we have different screenings based on different needs. Our physiotherapists are aware different age groups and performance goals have different biomechanical needs, and our screenings will adapt to this.

What do we assess?

Swimmers are often exposed to high training loads and because of this, poor biomechanics can lead to overuse injuries in the shoulder, neck, lumbar spine and occasionally in the hip and knee. Our assessment will look at each of these areas with the aim to reduce the risk of an injury as well as increase performance. Whilst we may discuss your swimming technique, this is primarily the role of a swimming coach. Following the screening, we can liaise with your coach to work as a team to improve your swimming.

Do I need an injury to do a screening?

Not at all! Our screening is used to highlight any areas that may potentially contribute to an injury. We then use the results from the screening to create an individualised, dry-land exercise program. This may include stretches, mobility exercises or strength training.

However, if you happen to have an injury whilst performing the screening, it may also help to highlight to you the reasoning behind the injury.

How will I know if I am improving?

During the screening, you will be given a program to help improve any areas of concern. Depending on the findings, we often recommend following up with the Physiotherapist after a few weeks of the program to assess progress and make any necessary changes.
